Cabin in the Sky is a free, three-evening outdoor artwork by the artist Ifé Franklin at the Overlook Ruins in Franklin Park, from Friday, October 2 to Sunday, October 4, 2026. The artist's page gives the start as 7 p.m. each evening; the City of Boston's listing for the opening night shows 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. The dates were moved from the original September 25-27 weekend.

What it is

Franklin describes the piece as an Afrofuturist activation in which her life-size ancestral Slave/Freedom Cabin becomes a mothership carrying the souls of ancestors toward freedom. The city's listing describes augmented reality, live performances, projections and participatory community activities, moving through three stages: the Ancestor Slave/Freedom Cabin, an Ancestor Procession and a Hush Harbor, where images of African-descended ancestors submitted by the community are brought to life with projection, sound, ring shout and collective ritual.

Who is behind it

The work is presented through the Un-Monument project with the City of Boston Mayor's Office of Arts and Culture and the Mellon Foundation, with The Theater Offensive as fiscal sponsor. The city lists it among its Boston 250 events.

Getting there and good to know

The Overlook Ruins sit on Pier Point Road inside Franklin Park, on the Jamaica Plain side of the park. It is an evening event outdoors in early October, so bring a warm layer and a light, and wear shoes for uneven ground among the old stone walls. Entry is free; register through the link on the artist's page so the organizers can plan numbers.
