The South Boston St. Patrick's Day / Evacuation Day Parade is Boston's big St. Patrick's parade, held in South Boston on Sunday, March 14, 2027. It is organized by the South Boston Allied War Veterans Council, which has run the parade since 1901, and it is free to watch.

Two holidays, one parade

The parade marks both St. Patrick's Day and Evacuation Day, the anniversary of the British army leaving Boston on March 17, 1776 - one reason a veterans council organizes it. The organizers also note that Boston's Irish community held North America's first St. Patrick's Day observance in 1737.

Time and route

The 2027 date is set on the council's parade registration page, but the step-off time and route map had not been posted when we checked. For reference, the 2026 parade stepped off at 11:30 am. Check the official site in early March for the route, which winds through South Boston's residential streets.

Getting there

Parking in South Boston on parade day is scarce and many streets close. The T is the practical choice; the MBTA publishes a St. Patrick's Day guide each year with service changes.

Good to know

South Boston is not the South End; the parade is in "Southie," along the harbor side of the city. Mid-March weather is often cold and raw, so dress for standing outdoors for a few hours.
