The Tip Tap Room
About
Chef Brian Poe opened The Tip Tap Room on Cambridge Street in June 2012, starting from steak tips, the New England staple in the name, and letting the menu wander from there into wild game and global flavors. The other half of the name is the beer: 36 taps, with a stash of rare bottles kept in the cellar, plus creative cocktails. Poe describes the result as high-end cooking served in an upscale casual room.
It suits beer drinkers who also want a proper dinner, a relaxed weekend brunch on Beacon Hill, or a family meal, since there is a kids' menu. The restaurant takes online bookings for small parties, and a larger group should call ahead.
The tips
Tips come four ways. The steak tips are served with horseradish potatoes, cherry peppers and bordelaise; the beef tenderloin tips with a bourbon barbecue marinade, smoked apple salsa and blue cheese butter; and chicken and tofu versions keep the idea open to everyone. Half portions let you try two. Around them, the menu covers burgers from a steak burger to a lamb burger with tzatziki, boar gnocchi, Thai coconut curry shrimp and a daily specials board.
The chef's range
Poe's own bio traces a career from Georgia and the 1996 Atlanta Olympics to Arizona and Boston hotel kitchens, and says his menus draw on travels through 38 states and 24 countries. Over the years that has meant game such as kangaroo, elk, ostrich and antelope; recent specials include a rabbit ragu, so ask what is on the board.
Brunch and drinks
The doors open at 10:30 a.m. on Saturdays and Sundays, and the brunch menu has omelets, corned beef hash, chilaquiles, doughnut holes and a Poe-lenta Italian Benny. Brunch drinks include an Amalfi spritz, Bloody Marys, Irish coffee and sangria and mimosas by the pitcher or bottle. Nick Gianotti is the general manager and beverage director.
Next door
In 2022 Poe and Gianotti opened Crane River Cheese Club next door, a small grocery, butcher, charcuterie, sandwich and cheese shop that also caters.
