XV Beacon is a 61-room hotel in a turn-of-the-century Beaux Arts building at 15 Beacon Street, on the edge of Beacon Hill. The lobby keeps a marble grand staircase, mahogany paneling and the original caged-glass elevator, while the rooms upstairs, seven to a floor, are contemporary in taupe, cream and espresso, with fireplaces, Frette linens and art commissioned for the hotel.

It suits couples, returning business travelers and anyone who values privacy and personal service over a long list of facilities. Government Center station on the Blue Line is two blocks away, about four minutes on foot, and Boston Common is a block from the door. The hotel puts Faneuil Hall Marketplace about 10 minutes' walk away and Newbury Street about 15.

Rooms and suites

Rooms run from the Classic, about 300 square feet with a walk-in rain shower and a desk in front of the fireplace, to the Gilbert Stuart Suite, a two-bedroom of about 1,400 square feet. The Beacon Hill Studio looks onto Beacon Street, and the corner Boston Common Studio has views of the street and the Common. The Contemporary Classic and both studios have whirlpool tubs. Windows open for fresh air, and there are three ADA rooms, all in the Beacon Hill Studio category.

Service and small luxuries

The house cars, a sedan and an SUV, give guests complimentary drop-offs around downtown, one vehicle a day, so reserve ahead. A Les Clefs d'Or concierge team handles tickets, trainers and in-room massage. A rooftop deck with Beacon Hill and Charles River views opens from June to October, and the 24-hour fitness room has a Woodway treadmill, a Peloton bike and a Hydrow rower.

Dogs welcome

Well-behaved dogs of any size stay with advance notice, with homemade biscuits and a bed provided, and half of the pet fee goes to local animal charities. The higher floors are kept dog-free for guests with allergies.

Mooo…. is the modern steakhouse at 15 Beacon Street from chef-owner Jamie Mammano. Signature cuts include an all-natural grass-fed ribeye and an A5 Wagyu sirloin, and the kitchen also serves breakfast every day, a bar menu in the afternoon and a dessert menu. Dinner reservations are required. The restaurant also supplies the hotel's in-room dining, available 24 hours to guests.
