Boston vs. Chicago: Which City Fits Your Trip

Pick Boston for colonial and Revolutionary history, a harbor you can walk beside for miles, and a small city where most sights are a short T ride apart. Pick Chicago for skyscraper architecture, the Lake Michigan shoreline, a bigger restaurant scene and a city about four times Boston's population. Both are strong sports towns, and they are far enough apart, 861 miles by air, that flying is the practical way between them. The figures below come from the U.S. Census Bureau, NOAA, the two transit agencies, the National Park Service and the cities' park and architecture organizations, checked October 7, 2026. More Boston numbers are on our Boston stats page.

Population and land area are city-proper figures, not metro areas. Weather figures are NOAA's 1991–2020 normals; Chicago's official station is at O'Hare, inland from the lake.

Architecture: brownstones and landmarks vs. the skyline

Chicago is the trip for architecture lovers. After the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, which the Chicago History Museum says destroyed three and a half square miles and more than 18,000 structures, the city rebuilt in iron, stone and then steel. The Chicago Architecture Center lists the Home Insurance Building, completed in 1885 by William Le Baron Jenney and demolished in 1931, as among the world's first skyscrapers. The easiest way in is the Chicago Architecture Center's River Cruise aboard Chicago's First Lady: 90 minutes, more than 50 buildings, departing from the Michigan Avenue Bridge at Wacker Drive several times a day from March to November.

Boston's architecture is older and lower. The Old State House dates from 1713. In Back Bay, Trinity Church, designed by Henry Hobson Richardson and built between 1872 and 1877, became a National Historic Landmark in 1971. Across Copley Square, the Boston Public Library's McKim building opened in 1895; the National Park Service cited it as the first outstanding example of Renaissance Beaux-Arts Classicism in America when it made it a National Historic Landmark in 1986. The library's lot, at Dartmouth and Boylston Streets in what the library calls the newly filled Back Bay, was granted to the city by the state in 1880. Our Back Bay guide covers the neighborhood.

Lakefront vs. harbor

Both cities are built on the water, but the water does different things. Chicago's Lakefront Trail runs 18 miles for bikes, with an 18.5-mile pedestrian trail, from Ardmore Avenue on the North Side to 71st Street on the South Side. Boston's Harborwalk is a near-continuous 43-mile path from the Neponset River in Dorchester to Constitution Beach in East Boston, through Charlestown, the North End, downtown, the Seaport and South Boston. Boston also has islands: the Boston Harbor Islands include 34 islands and peninsulas, and public ferries run to several of them, including Spectacle, Georges and Peddocks. See our guide to things to do on the water in Boston.

Size, density and getting around

Chicago has about four times Boston's population and nearly five times its land area, but Boston is slightly denser, at about 14,000 people per square mile against about 12,100. In practice, Boston's visitor areas are closer together, and Chicago's are spread along the lake and the river. Both have older rail systems: Boston's Tremont Street subway opened in 1897 as the first in the United States, while Chicago's first elevated line ran in 1892. The CTA's eight "L" routes serve 146 stations, and its Red and Blue lines run 24 hours; Boston's T runs from about 5 a.m. to 1 a.m., and until 2 a.m. on Friday and Saturday. The American Public Transportation Association counted 36.9 million trips on Chicago's "L" and 30.0 million on Boston's subway lines from April to June 2026. A Boston ride costs $2.40. Our guide to Boston's public transportation explains the lines.

Weather and snow

Chicago is colder in winter, and Boston is snowier. NOAA's 1991–2020 normals give O'Hare a January average high of 31.6°F and low of 18.8°F, against 36.8°F and 23.1°F at Boston's Logan Airport. Yet Logan averages 49.2 inches of snow a year to O'Hare's 38.4. Summers are close, with July highs averaging 84.5°F at O'Hare and 82.1°F at Logan, and October highs are nearly identical at about 62°F to 63°F. Our guides to Boston in winter and the best time to visit help plan around the weather.

Sports

Each city has one of baseball's two oldest parks. Fenway Park, home of the Red Sox since April 20, 1912, is the oldest ballpark in Major League Baseball. Wrigley Field is next, with its first game on April 23, 1914, when it was Weeghman Park; the Cubs moved in for 1916. Counting top-tier MLB, NBA, NFL and NHL titles by metro area through June 2026, a widely used tally gives Boston 40 and Chicago 29. One practical note: the Patriots play at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, outside Boston. See our Boston sports guide and Fenway neighborhood guide.

Food

Chicago's fine-dining scene is larger. Its 2025 Michelin selection, announced on November 18, 2025, includes one three-star restaurant, Smyth, and four two-star restaurants: Alinea, Ever, Kasama and Oriole. Boston's first Michelin selection, at the same ceremony, gave one star, to 311 Omakase in the South End, and named Bib Gourmands including Bar Volpe and Fox & the Knife in Boston. Boston's case for visitors is seafood and the North End's Italian-American restaurants and bakeries; see our guide to what to eat in Boston.

Costs

We could not find a single published source comparing Boston and Chicago hotel rates on the same basis, so we do not quote figures. Compare the dates you want in both cities, and watch for Boston's big event weekends, such as Marathon Monday in April and the Head of the Charles in October.

Flights, airports and getting between them

Southwest Airlines lists 861 miles between Boston and Chicago Midway, with an average flight time of 2 hours 42 minutes westbound and 2 hours 16 minutes eastbound. Chicago has two airports: O'Hare, which handled about 84.8 million passengers in 2025 according to Airports Council International's ranking, and Midway. The CTA Blue Line runs 24 hours from O'Hare to downtown in a normal 40 to 45 minutes for $5 or less, and the Orange Line reaches downtown from Midway in 20 to 25 minutes for $2.50 or less. Boston's Logan, which handled 43.2 million passengers in 2025, is in East Boston, and the Silver Line SL1 bus from the terminals to South Station is free. For airlines serving Boston, see which airlines fly to Boston.

There is a train. Amtrak's Lake Shore Limited links Boston and Chicago overnight, and its Boston section is timetabled at about 22 to 23 hours, so it is a rail experience rather than a quick connection.

If you have time for both

With a flight of under three hours, Boston and Chicago pair well on an open-jaw ticket, flying into one and home from the other, or as two separate long weekends. Three days in Boston covers the Freedom Trail, the North End, Back Bay and a museum or a game at Fenway; Chicago's architecture cruise, lakefront and museums usually need at least as long. Our four-day Boston itinerary is a good base for the Boston half.
