The Hotel Madison in Boston no longer exists. The 500-room hotel opened beside North Station in 1930 as the Hotel Manger, took the Madison name in the late 1950s, closed in 1976 and was brought down by a controlled implosion on May 15, 1983. The Thomas P. O'Neill Jr. Federal Building has stood on the site, at 10 Causeway Street, since 1986.

What was the Hotel Madison in Boston?
It was the hotel built into the North Station complex, directly connected to the station and to the old Boston Garden arena. According to the West End Museum, the 500-room Hotel Manger opened at North Station in August 1930. After the Boston & Maine Railroad took full ownership in the late 1950s it was renamed the Hotel Madison.
Its guests came with the building's neighbors. GBH's history of the hotel describes boxers, visiting hockey and basketball teams, and touring entertainers such as Roy Rogers and Gene Autry, and the Beatles stayed there during their first American tour in September 1964. That is the Madison most people are searching for: the arena hotel of mid-century Boston, not a modern luxury property.
When did the Hotel Madison close, and why?
The hotel closed in 1976, as the rail traffic through North Station that had fed it dwindled. The empty building stood beside the Garden for several more years until May 15, 1983, when, as GBH reports, about 500 pounds of dynamite brought it down in seconds in front of a crowd estimated at 26,000.
What stands on the Hotel Madison site now?
The Thomas P. O'Neill Jr. Federal Building, named for the former Speaker of the House, was built on the site as part of the North Station urban renewal project. The General Services Administration gives its address as 10 Causeway Street and its completion year as 1986. It is a working federal office building rather than a visitor attraction.

Where to stay near TD Garden and North Station today
The block the Madison shared with the station is still the most convenient place to sleep for a Bruins or Celtics game or a concert. North Station is served by the Orange Line, the Green Line and the Commuter Rail, and the Amtrak Downeaster to Maine leaves from the same building. citizenM, on Causeway Street, is the closest. Hotel Indigo is on Friend Street. Pennyweight Hotel Boston occupies the building at 155 Portland Street that was the Onyx Hotel until it joined Hilton's Curio Collection in 2024. Eurostars The Boxer is on Merrimac Street. A slightly longer walk, with more character
Battery Wharf Hotel is the other hotel TD Garden lists. The Liberty, in the former Charles Street Jail at the foot of Beacon Hill, is about a 16-minute walk from TD Garden, across the street from Charles/MGH station on the Red Line. Canopy by Hilton Boston Downtown, at 99 Blackstone Street near Haymarket, is about 11 minutes on foot.

Check the TD Garden event calendar against your dates even if you are not going to a game, since the hotels on this block are the first choice for anyone who is.
