The Liberty occupies the former Charles Street Jail, a granite building completed in 1851 to a cross-shaped design by Gridley James Fox Bryant. The last prisoners left in 1990, and after a restoration overseen with state and federal preservation bodies the building reopened as a hotel in 2007. Its 90-foot central atrium, with the original catwalks and arched windows, is now the lobby, and there are 298 rooms and suites. It is part of Marriott's Luxury Collection.
