At the bar

Guinness comes in a 20 oz pour, and the draft list leans on New England breweries: Maine Beer Co., Hill Farmstead, Night Shift, Harpoon, Allagash and Jack's Abby, plus cider from Downeast in East Boston. The house cocktails nod to the history, with an Old Fashioned Tea Party built on Earl Grey–infused bourbon, a Two Pleasant Manhattan named for the address and Joseph's Sangria. There are espresso martinis and non-alcoholic beers too.

The kitchen

The menu is New England comfort food: clam chowder, fried haddock fish and chips, a lobster roll of Maine lobster, a short-rib shepherd's pie and a Sons of Liberty burger with mushrooms and Gruyère, with rotating specials such as Guinness beef stew. Vegetarian dishes are marked on the menu, and the weekend brunch runs on Saturdays and Sundays.

Getting a table

There is seating in the tavern room, at the bar and on the patio. The tavern does not take online bookings: walk-ins are seated first come, first served, “just as they've been for generations,” and larger parties and private events go through the phone. Takeout and delivery are also available.

Before or after the monument

The tavern's history page is a good primer for the walk up the hill. The monument's lodge holds a marble statue of Joseph Warren, and the Bunker Hill Museum across the street tells the story of Charlestown, the battle and the monument itself.
