Boston Harbor Hotel opened on Rowes Wharf in 1987, the project of developer Norman Leventhal, who set out to turn a neglected industrial shoreline back toward the city. The domed rotunda and the archway that opens the building to the harbor are now among the most recognizable sights on the downtown waterfront, and the hotel holds a Forbes Travel Guide Five-Star rating.

Rooms and views

Every guest room category is sold as either city view or harbor view, so the view is the real decision when you book. Rooms have marble bathrooms with rainfall showers and Diptyque products, and there are 14 room and suite types in all, up to the John Adams Presidential Suite. Select suites have private balconies. The 15th floor is kept pet-free and hypoallergenic, a useful request for allergy sufferers.

Arriving and exploring by water

The Rowes Wharf Water Taxi runs from March through December, daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. (until 5 p.m. in late fall and winter), and serves the whole waterfront including the airport; the concierge books it. The wharf is also the hub for City Cruises commuter boats to Charlestown and Hingham, harbor island trips, whale watches and seasonal ferries to Provincetown and Salem. Sailors can dock at the hotel's marina, which takes yachts up to 200 feet, and a complimentary house car covers trips within two miles, subject to availability.

Rowes Wharf Health Club

An $8 million renovation added private wellness pods, a Full Swing golf simulator, halotherapy salt and infrared saunas and upgraded steam rooms. The indoor pool and its lounge have hot tubs and a chair lift, and the fitness center is open around the clock. Massage and personal training are booked through the club.

Restaurants and bars

Rowes Wharf Sea Grille is the hotel's full-service restaurant, serving seasonal New England cooking with a seafood focus and views over the harbor at breakfast, lunch and dinner. It has a children's menu and takes reservations through OpenTable.

The Dark Bar is an intimate cocktail lounge with deep cherry tones, leather seating and a long list of classic and house cocktails, plus a short food menu.
