Democracy Brewing
About
Democracy Brewing is a worker-owned brewery and restaurant at 35 Temple Place in Downtown Crossing. It opened on Independence Day 2018 with the idea of reviving the traditional public house, and every beer on the house list is brewed on site, from a crisp helles lager to a nitro Irish stout and an imperial stout.
It suits a relaxed pint and a proper meal after shopping in Downtown Crossing or a walk across Boston Common, and travelers who like knowing who is behind the bar: the business is owned by the people who work there, and it passes 7% of all food sales directly to the kitchen team.
What is on tap
House beers are grouped by style, light, hoppy and dark, with a rotating seasonal or two, and come in 5-ounce, 16-ounce and 32-ounce pours or as a flight of four 5-ounce tastes. Names lean into the theme: Worker’s Pint is the helles, I Know the Owner the pale ale. There is also wine by the glass or bottle, a short list of signature cocktails such as micheladas, house-brewed boozy seltzers that also come as 0% mocktails, and non-alcoholic cans and sodas.
The kitchen
The menu is scratch-made comfort food with a Latin American accent: Venezuelan braised beef on tater tots, a mango-habanero shrimp aguachile, carne asada and fried fish tacos, a smash burger, swordfish and chips and a Boston clam chowder. Churros filled with Bavarian cream close things out.
The room and events
The brewery describes the space as a neighborhood pub crossed with an old-world beer hall, with a full kitchen and an event room that has hosted fundraisers, art shows, live music and comedy. Downtown Comedy Club runs ticketed stand-up shows in the side room. For private events, the downtown space holds up to 180 guests, including a lounge and a private dining room.
Democracy also runs a location in East Boston and the City Hall Beer Garden, each with its own hours.
