Toro
About
Toro has been serving Barcelona-inspired tapas on Washington Street in the South End since 2005, and it is still the restaurant most closely tied to chef and owner Ken Oringer, who runs it as part of his JK Food Group. The menu is a long list of hot and cold small plates meant to be shared, with classic-leaning cocktails and a natural wine list alongside. The MICHELIN Guide includes Toro in its Boston selection.
It suits groups and couples who like to order in rounds rather than commit to a single main course, and anyone who wants a lively South End dinner rather than a hushed one. The restaurant sits on the southern stretch of Washington Street and points guests to Worcester Square on the Silver Line or Massachusetts Avenue on the Orange Line; parking is on the street.
What to order
The menu runs from jamón and Spanish cheeses through pintxos to tapas from the sea and the land. Salt-cod croquetas with fried lemon and alioli, grilled corn with alioli, lime, espelette and aged cheese, and roasted bone marrow with oxtail marmalade are long-standing fixtures, and the MICHELIN Guide singles out the croquetas and the marrow. Paella comes as a seafood-and-chicken Valenciana or a vegetable version. Because the kitchen cooks with the seasons, individual dishes change through the year.
Brunch, takeout and the supper club
Sunday adds a brunch service with its own dishes and cocktails. Toro also sells takeout through its online ordering during dinner hours, and runs a supper club subscription that is linked from its website.
Groups and private events
The restaurant hosts private events for up to 75 guests, either seated or cocktail style, from birthdays and holiday parties to weddings, and an inquiry form on its events page starts the process. For an ordinary table of six or more, expect that a gratuity may be added to the bill; the figure is in the FAQ.
