Uni
About
Uni is chef Ken Oringer's Japanese restaurant inside The Eliot Hotel on Commonwealth Avenue in Back Bay, built around sashimi, nigiri and maki alongside hot plates that borrow from street food around the world. It began in 2002 as a small sashimi bar in the lounge of Clio, Oringer's restaurant in the hotel, and in early 2016, after Clio's final service, it reopened as an expanded restaurant filling the space.
It suits sushi lovers who want inventive fish rather than a classic omakase counter, couples marking an occasion with the daily tasting menu, and anyone staying at The Eliot who wants a serious dinner without leaving the building. Service is dinner only, every night, and there is no dress code, although the restaurant notes that most guests dress up a little.
The menu
Executive chef David Bazirgan, who took over the kitchen in 2021 after years at No. 9 Park and in San Francisco, pairs the Mediterranean flavors he grew up with and traditional Japanese technique. The restaurant describes its seafood as coming from Tokyo's Tsukiji market and local New England catches. A recent dinner menu included a Hokkaido uni spoon with osetra caviar and quail egg yolk, Island Creek oysters, a long list of nigiri and sashimi such as chutoro, madai and shima aji, duck confit gyoza, miso black cod and A5 wagyu priced by the ounce.
Tasting menu or a la carte
Uni serves both every night. The daily tasting menu is the fullest version of the kitchen, with an optional beverage pairing, and the team will also build a chef's choice family-style meal around a budget. A weeknight prix fixe is served in the Uni Lounge. Prices are in the FAQ.
Private dining
Groups have several options: a chef's table high-top overlooking the bar for up to 12, Lower Uni (the original sashimi bar space) for up to 27, a private dining room for 50 seated or 65 standing, and full restaurant rental. Events can also be held elsewhere in The Eliot Hotel.
