The biggest things to do in Boston in October 2026 are the Head of the Charles Regatta on October 16 to 18, the free Boston Book Festival in Copley Square on October 17, fall color at the Arnold Arboretum, and the last weeks of the harbor season: the Boston Harbor Islands ferries stop after October 12. Expect mild days, with an average high of 62°F and a low of 48°F.
October is also when Boston's museums open their doors for free on Indigenous Peoples' Day, when the lantern show at Franklin Park Zoo runs every night, and when Salem, north of the city, becomes the region's Halloween destination.

What is the weather like in Boston in October?
Mild and mostly dry. Logan Airport's 1991 to 2020 normals give an average high of 62°F and an average low of 48°F, with about 4 inches of rain spread over 11 days. Most days pass 50°F, and a night or two can drop to 40°F or below, so pack layers and a rain jacket.
Head of the Charles Regatta, October 16 to 18
The Head of the Charles is a rowing regatta on a 4,702-meter course up the Charles River, starting near the DeWolfe Boathouse. The river is the line between Boston and Cambridge, so you can watch from either bank. The regatta's own suggestions include the bike path at the start, the bridges along the course, and the top of the Weeks Footbridge, which it calls one of the most popular spots.
Boston Book Festival, October 17
On the same Saturday, the Boston Book Festival fills Copley Square with free author talks from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The Central Library faces the square and is free to walk through.
Where to see fall color in the city
The Arnold Arboretum in Jamaica Plain is the best single place: 281 acres and more than 15,000 plants, free and open every day from sunrise to sunset. Take the Orange Line to Forest Hills and walk along the Arborway to the gate. Its bonsai collection is on view until mid-November. Closer to downtown, Boston Common and the Public Garden are an easy walk from most hotels, though the Swan Boats have finished for the year and return in April.
Last chances on the water
October closes several summer boats. The Boston Harbor Islands ferries run their fall schedule to Spectacle and Georges Islands on selected days, and October 12 is the last day of the 2026 season. The fast ferries to Provincetown run until October 12 from Long Wharf and until October 18 from the Seaport, with a late-fall schedule after that.
Whale watches last longer. The New England Aquarium's whale watch with Boston Harbor City Cruises runs from May through November, on trips of about three to four hours, so October whale watching is still on.
October evenings: lanterns and ghost tours
At Franklin Park Zoo, Boston Lights runs nightly from 5 to 10:30 p.m. in October and ends on November 8. It is a separate evening ticket that does not include daytime zoo admission. For something darker, our guide to spooky things to do in Boston covers ghost tours and burying grounds.
Halloween: Boston or Salem?
Salem, north of Boston, is the region's Halloween town, and it works as a day trip; our Boston to Salem day-trip guide explains how to get there. In Boston itself, October nights are better spent on the lanterns and ghost tours above.
Indigenous Peoples' Day weekend
The holiday falls on Monday, October 12, in 2026. The ICA and the Gardner Museum are free for everyone that day, and the Museum of Fine Arts is free for Massachusetts residents. The Gardner releases its free tickets two weeks ahead. Our guide to the Columbus Day weekend has a full plan.
If it rains
The MFA, the Museum of Science and the New England Aquarium fill a wet day, and a Fenway Park tour runs in any weather. For the months either side, see Boston in September and Boston in November.
