At Carmelina's the cooking happens in full view. The kitchen at 307 Hanover Street is open to the small dining room, family photos hang on the walls, and in summer the front wall retracts so the tables by the street sit in the open air. Carmelina's opened in 2012, and executive chef Damien DiPaola has built its menu from his family's recipes; the restaurant calls it Sicilian comfort food with a Mediterranean twist, divided between fresh pasta and seafood.
It suits visitors who would rather book than queue. Tables are reserved online through Yelp Reservations only, not by phone, and the restaurant warns that they go weeks or months ahead. Each booking holds the table for 90 minutes, and parties top out at six. There is no coffee or dessert: the restaurant sends diners out to the neighborhood's bakeries and gelato shops instead, which turns a pastry stop into part of the evening.
