Contessa is the rooftop restaurant of The Newbury Boston, a glass-enclosed Northern Italian trattoria on the top floor of the hotel at the corner of Newbury and Arlington Streets, with views across Back Bay and the Boston Public Garden. It opened in 2021 and is run by Major Food Group, the company founded by Jeff Zalaznick and chefs Mario Carbone and Rich Torrisi, with interiors designed by Ken Fulk to evoke a nostalgia for another era.

It suits a special-occasion dinner, a weekday breakfast or weekend brunch with the Public Garden below, or a Negroni at the bar. It serves from early morning until late, so it is also practical for hotel guests. The Newbury says Arlington station on the Green Line is one block from the hotel.

The menu

The restaurant calls its cooking classic grand trattoria cuisine. The dishes it names as its classics are Piemontese carpaccio, spreads of antipasti, signature pizzas, tortellini en brodo, ricotta gnudi and a traditional bistecca Fiorentina. Separate menus cover breakfast, lunch, weekend brunch, dinner and dessert, and daytime meals are served in the sunlit room while dinner runs into the evening.

The bar and the wine

Contessa keeps an inventory of some 6,000 bottles, focused on benchmark Italian and French wines from Piedmont, Tuscany, Bordeaux and Burgundy. At the bar, the signatures are its Negronis and a chilled Martini, and cocktails are served after the kitchen closes: until midnight early in the week and 1 a.m. from Thursday to Saturday.

Private events

The Wine Room is a fully private space for up to 22 guests, the Garden View Terrace takes up to 55 seated or 65 standing on a semi-private basis, and the main dining room takes large-party reservations of 9 to 16. Full buyouts are considered case by case.
