Giacomo's Ristorante
About
Giacomo's is the Hanover Street restaurant with the line outside and the cash-only rule, and it keeps both on purpose. It opened at 355 Hanover in 1985 as a small dining room with a tiny kitchen and a short menu, and it still makes its pasta in-house and still serves two sauces invented there: the Giacomo, a lobster-based red sauce with a touch of béchamel cream, and the Fracomo, which combines the Giacomo with the kitchen's fra diavolo.
It suits hungry travelers who want a generous plate of seafood pasta in an old-school room and do not mind standing on the sidewalk to get it. There are no reservations for parties under ten, no cards are accepted, and the doors open at noon every day. Richard Travaglione, Jr., who took over in 2019, describes his job as keeping the place exactly as it has always worked.
The Zuppa di Pesce
The dish the restaurant calls the one that built its reputation is the Zuppa di Pesce: lobster, shrimp, scallops, calamari, clams and mussels over linguine, with your choice of sauce. It is designed to be shared, with a plate charge for each additional person.
Pasta and sauces
Most of the menu is pasta with a choice of sauce, from pesto and white wine with garlic and oil to the spicy lobster-based fra diavolo and the two house sauces. Seafood combinations of shrimp, scallops and broccoli sit alongside house ravioli and the red-sauce standards, veal and chicken Marsala with mushrooms and prosciutto, and veal or chicken parmigiana.
On the record
The restaurant quotes an old Zagat line about budget-minded diners licking their plates clean, and says Tasting Table named it one of the 20 best Italian restaurants in the United States in 2023. In January 2026 Boston Bruins forward David Pastrnák cooked alongside the kitchen for an episode of the NHL series Beyond the Glass.
Good to know
The dining room is small, and parties of five or more may have a gratuity added. Wheelchair users are asked to ring the bell at the entrance. For a larger group there is a separate private dining space for ten or more, booked by phone.
