Grill 23 & Bar
About
Grill 23 & Bar has been Back Bay's independent steakhouse since 1983, when Ken Himmel, then developing Copley Place, opened a classic steak-and-seafood dining room in the old Salada Tea Building on Berkeley Street. It is still run by the Himmel family's Himmel Hospitality Group, and its wine program of more than 2,600 selections holds a Wine Spectator Grand Award.
It suits the dinners Boston books a steakhouse for: client entertaining, milestone birthdays and anniversaries, and serious wine drinkers who want a long list and sommeliers to steer it. The restaurant is at the corner of Berkeley and Stuart Streets and serves dinner every night.
Steaks and seafood
Brandt Beef, a family-owned California ranch, has been the primary steak supplier for more than two decades. The menu runs from a filet mignon and prime New York strip to a 100-day aged prime ribeye, a 45-day dry-aged porterhouse, American Kobe and Japanese A5 Wagyu, plus a 32-ounce Australian Wagyu tomahawk meant for sharing, with a seafood tower, local oysters, lobster bisque and steamed lobster on the seafood side. Executive chef Ryan Marcoux, who joined the group in 2020, leads the kitchen, and general manager Matt Harrington, with Himmel Hospitality for more than 13 years, runs the dining room.
The wine list and the bar
Beverage director Paul Lee, an Advanced Sommelier, oversees the list, and the group's corporate beverage director, Brahm Callahan, is a Master Sommelier. The bar was rebuilt in March 2014 and is a separate option from the dining room for a steak and a glass of wine.
Dessert
Pastry chef Stacey Cassie makes the house signatures, from warm cornbread muffins to the coconut cake the menu calls famous.
Private dining
A second floor added over the years holds eight private dining spaces, from The Alcove for 10 guests to the Full Suite for 140, used for business dinners, celebrations and weddings.
