Mistral is chef and owner Jamie Mammano's French Mediterranean restaurant on Columbus Avenue, open since 1997 and named for the wind that sweeps through the south of France. It was the first restaurant of what became Columbus Hospitality Group, which went on to open Sorellina, Mooo and Ostra and to run the XV Beacon hotel. The room is built to feel like Provence: stucco, iron, aged wood and stone, high ceilings and arched floor-to-ceiling windows.

It suits a special-occasion dinner, a business meal or a first night in Boston that should feel like an event without being a tasting-menu marathon, since everything is ordered à la carte. The restaurant sits between Berkeley and Clarendon Streets, on the Back Bay edge of the South End, and serves dinner only.

The menu

The cooking is classic French with Mediterranean sun in it. The current menu lists escargots in garlic butter, a foie gras parfait, tuna tartare with crispy wontons and thin-crust pizzas from the grill among the starters, then Dover sole meunière, a half roasted duck with mushroom risotto, rack of lamb with gratin dauphinoise and a tenderloin with vin rouge. Sides include truffle fries, and desserts from pastry chef Shane Gray run from crème brûlée to a warm Valrhona chocolate torte. Dishes change with the seasons.

The room and the bar

The main dining room seats 126, with another 14 in the lounge and 20 at the bar, where the full wine list and cocktails are served and the bar opens half an hour before the dining room. The design, by Pat Sharkey of Sharkey Design Company, is meant to be elegant without formality, and the fact sheet credits the arched windows with drenching the room in light.

Private dining

Le Salon du Mistral, the private dining room, seats up to 60 or holds 80 for a reception, and it is available for lunch as well as dinner, which makes it a common choice for corporate lunches, rehearsal dinners and milestone celebrations.
