Boston celebrates the Fourth of July in two halves. The morning is history: a City of Boston parade to the Old State House, where the Declaration of Independence is read from the balcony at 10:15 a.m., and USS Constitution's turnaround sail in the harbor. The night is the Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular, a free concert at the Hatch Shell on the Charles River Esplanade that ends with fireworks over the river at about 9:15 p.m. Boston Harborfest runs festival events and its own harbor fireworks across the days before. The details below come from the organizers' 2026 pages, checked October 7, 2026. Dates for July 4, 2027, a Sunday, have not been announced.

The Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular

The Pops' July 4 concert needs no ticket: admission is free and first come, first served. The 2026 edition was its 52nd year, conducted by Keith Lockhart with guest artists Lainey Wilson, Chance The Rapper and Trombone Shorty, and it served as the signature event of the Commonwealth's MA250 commemoration of the nation's 250th anniversary. The program keeps a familiar shape: patriotic favorites and a singalong, the "1812 Overture" (accompanied in 2026 by a drone show at about 9 p.m.), then roughly 15 minutes of fireworks choreographed to the orchestra. In 2026 the whole concert aired locally on WHDH-TV Channel 7 and streamed on the CNN app and CNN.com from 7 to 9:30 p.m.

The stage is the DCR Hatch Shell at 47 David G. Mugar Way, between the Longfellow and Massachusetts Avenue bridges. The Oval is the lawn directly in front of it, with screens and speakers. Access was first announced for noon on July 4, 2026, then moved to 4 p.m. two days before because of an extreme-heat forecast, and the organizers asked guests not to arrive early. The 2026 FAQ listed about 30 food trucks and more than 350 portable restrooms on the Boston and Cambridge sides. Once you are through security you can move between the concert and fireworks areas. The July 3 dress rehearsal is closed to the public; it is recorded and would replace the broadcast if severe weather stopped the July 4 show. Light or intermittent rain does not cancel it.

An accessible area sits inside the Oval to the right of the Hatch Shell. People with disabilities are admitted first come, first served with one guest, who may bring a folding chair, and American Sign Language interpretation is provided at the Shell. That area closes at 6 p.m. or when full.

What you can bring to the Esplanade

Everyone entering the Oval or the Island/Lagoon areas passes a bag check, and the rules are strictly enforced. Under the 2026 rules:

  • Allowed: pop-up tents or canopies with no sides up to 10 by 10 feet (taken down at 6 p.m.), blankets or tarps up to 10 by 10 feet, folding or beach chairs, coolers carried by a shoulder strap or single handle, and liquids in sealed clear plastic containers of 2 liters or less.
  • Not allowed: backpacks, wheeled coolers, glass, cans, pre-mixed or alcoholic drinks, grills, propane or open flames, firearms, weapons, sharp objects, fireworks and drones.
  • Bicycles cannot go through the checkpoints into the Oval or Island/Lagoon areas. They are allowed elsewhere but must not be left unattended, and bikes locked to fences or poles may be removed.

Where to watch the fireworks

The Pops fireworks are launched over the Charles River and, according to the organizers, can be seen from both the Boston and Cambridge sides. The Esplanade, including the Oval and the Island/Lagoon areas, puts you with the orchestra. The opposite bank along Memorial Drive is in Cambridge, not Boston, and Memorial Drive closes to vehicles from 4 p.m. on the Fourth. On the water, 2026 boaters had to anchor by 8:15 p.m., keep 100 feet from shore and 1,000 feet from the fireworks barges, and could not anchor between the barges and the Massachusetts Avenue Bridge.

The Harborfest Fireworks are a separate show, launched from a barge a few hundred yards off Long Wharf. Harborfest names Christopher Columbus Park, Fan Pier, Flagship Wharf, Piers Park, LoPresti Park in East Boston and Griffin's Wharf as the best vantage points. In 2026 they went up on Thursday, July 2, at 9:15 p.m., so you could see both displays on one trip. Harbor operators also sell cruises; see our guide to Boston Harbor dinner and sunset cruises and where Boston Harbor is.

The morning: parade, Declaration reading and the Oration

The City's program starts with parade staging at Dartmouth Street and Copley Square at 7:30 a.m. In 2026 the parade stepped off at 9 a.m. and ran down Boylston Street, left onto Tremont Street, and ended at Court Street. At 10 a.m. it paused at the Old Granary Burying Ground for the Halt of Honors, with wreaths placed at the graves of Samuel Adams, John Hancock, Robert Treat Paine, Peter Faneuil and Crispus Attucks. At 10:15 a.m. the public gathers outside the Old State House while the Captain Commanding of the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company reads the Declaration of Independence from the balcony. At 11 a.m. the Independence Day Oration takes place inside Faneuil Hall. Expect street closures and parking restrictions on Cambridge, Court and Dartmouth streets and around the route all morning.

Several Freedom Trail sites run their own programs. In 2026 Old North Church sold a $10 July 4th Pass that included dramatic readings of the Declaration at 11 a.m., 1:30 p.m. and 3 p.m.

USS Constitution's July 4 turnaround

On Independence Day the Navy takes USS Constitution, "Old Ironsides," out of the Charlestown Navy Yard for a turnaround sail. In 2026 she got underway at 10 a.m., fired a 21-gun salute off Fort Independence on Castle Island at about 11:30 a.m., then a 17-gun salute passing U.S. Coast Guard Base Boston, the former site of Edmund Hartt's shipyard, where she was built and launched on October 21, 1797. Sailing aboard is by invitation only; the public watches from Castle Island, the Boston Harborwalk and the Navy Yard. The ship closed to visitors that morning and reopened for tours from 3 to 6 p.m. The USS Constitution Museum stayed open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. with a Navy Yard party. Our guide to things to do near North Station and Charlestown covers the walk over.

Boston Harborfest

Harborfest bills itself as Boston's official Fourth of July celebration. The 44th edition ran from July 2 to 4, 2026, around Downtown Crossing, Christopher Columbus Park, the Rose Kennedy Greenway and the harbor. It opened on July 2 at noon on Summer Street with a ceremonial cake cutting, and Christopher Columbus Park hosted waterfront concerts from 2 to 6 p.m. on July 2 and 3. Many events are free; the schedule marks the ones that charge and the few limited to ages 21 and over. Chowderfest, once part of Harborfest, has moved to the fall.

Getting there: the T, road closures and parking

Take the T. For July 4, 2026, the MBTA made bus, subway, ferry, Commuter Rail and the RIDE free after 8:30 p.m. and ran subway lines on a Saturday schedule with extra service from 3 p.m. Most last Commuter Rail trains leave North Station and South Station between 11:30 p.m. and midnight, and wait up to 30 minutes after the fireworks end if the show is delayed. Bikes are not allowed on Commuter Rail after 8:30 p.m. The closest Boston-side stations for the Esplanade are Charles/MGH on the Red Line and Arlington on the Green Line; Kendall and Central on the Red Line serve the Cambridge bank. On foot, the Esplanade is reached from Beacon Street via Berkeley, Clarendon, Dartmouth and Fairfield streets and Massachusetts Avenue.

When (2026)Closure

If you must drive, the Pops organizers point to the Motor Mart Garage at 201 Stuart Street, which avoids the Charles Street traffic after the show.

Where to stay for the Fourth

For the Esplanade, Beacon Hill and Back Bay put you within walking distance; The Liberty sits beside Charles/MGH, and our Back Bay guide covers the neighborhood. For Harborfest, the Declaration reading and the Constitution sail, the waterfront works better: Boston Harbor Hotel on Rowes Wharf, the Boston Marriott Long Wharf and the Battery Wharf Hotel. The MBTA planned for hundreds of thousands of attendees in 2026, so book as soon as you know your dates.

Fourth of July 2027: what is announced

As of October 7, 2026, neither the Boston Symphony Orchestra nor Harborfest has published 2027 details, and the Pops page still thanks guests for attending the 2026 show. July 4, 2027 falls on a Sunday. In 2026 the guest artists were announced in May and the MBTA's service plan in late June; check bso.org, bostonharborfest.com and mbta.com/holidays before you plan around a time.

A short history

The Boston Pops was founded in 1885 to give Boston Symphony musicians summer work. Under Arthur Fiedler it began free concerts on the Esplanade in 1929, and in 1974, with help from David Mugar, the July 4 concert became the Fireworks Spectacular. Fiedler led the 1976 Bicentennial concert, which the BSO says broke records for live attendance and national TV viewing; Keith Lockhart marked 30 years leading the event in 2026. The Faneuil Hall Oration is older still: Harborfest notes it began in 1771 to commemorate the Boston Massacre and later became an Independence Day event, with John Hancock and John F. Kennedy among past orators. For the rest of the summer calendar see things to do in Boston in June and the Boston events calendar.
